Brilliant Metalwork – Jeweler’s Tattoo

"I first noticed it on margaret de patta's fingers in 1948 as she stood at her jeweler's bench. I didn't make much of it at the time. It did mean something to me, years later, when i noticed i also had the markings: three blue marks on the fingers of my left hand. so much like the marks i'd once seen on margaret's left hand. soon afterward, at a metal arts guild party i began asking to see member's hands. this created a buzz. everyone began looking at their hands, searching for what i had decided to call jeweler's tattoos. right handed jeweler's had marks on their left hands, left handed jeweler's had marks on their right hands. later i did a survey by postcards sent nationwide and found more jewelers with tattoos. i now have forty-eight names of jewelers with tattoos on their fingers. i am celebrating our new-found connections with my drawing called, "my jeweler's tattoos." - Merry Renk
