Please join Mobilia Gallery, Booth 411, at SOFA NY to celebrate Heirlooms of the Future, presenting decorative arts and studio jewelry by artists who are masters in their field, and introducing emerging artists whose approach to their media combines originality with meticulous craftsmanship.
Enjoy a special presentation of work by Japanese artists Mitsuko Akutso, Asagi Maeda, Kazumi Nagano, Tomie Nagano, Kyoko Okubo, Yuka Saito, Etsuko Sonobe and Yoko Miyaji- Zeltszerman, featuring woodworking and lacquer, hand stitched heritage quilts, exquisite woven and embroidered textiles and jewelry and sculpture fabricated from washi, precious metals and plastic.
The incomparable Mariko Kusumoto will demonstrate her new metal sculpture containing “minature marvels,” featuring numerous beloved childrens games, with movable parts.
Arline Fisch, named a living treasure by the State of California, will exhibit Sampler, a selection of important works from 1968 to the present.
Joyce Scott, The Queen of Beadwork, has created new neckpieces and sculpture for her exhibition, Kickin Again’.
View Tom Loeser’s newest sculptures and rocking boxes. Loeser was recently featured on the cover of American Craft Magazine.
Hanne Behrens, commissioned by the Queen of Denmark, will display her newest pieces of intricately woven and crocheted, silver and gold jewelry.
Dorothy Feibleman, will install her most recent piece, Lotus, her latest collection of extraordinary sake cups.
Jennifer Trask will present her new ground breaking series Flourish, comprising of removable jewelry mounted on encaustic panels.
Cristina Dias just completed a new collection of her amazing molded rubber jewelry.
Gallery Talks at Mobilia Gallery Booth #411
Mobilia Gallery will host a series of short artist conversations with slideshows at our booth. Themed snacks will be served. Although it is not required, you may call to reserve a space and let us know if you require a chair. The talks are all short, about 10 to 15 minutes and you will have an opportunity to talk with the artists. In addition to the artist book and catalogue signings, Mobilia is giving away complimentary copies of our catalogue Meditations in Metal: Contemporary Korean Jewelry. Please come by and request your free copy. 12:30 p.m. - Jennifer Trask - Flourish Series
The artist discusses her inspiring new body of work, Flourish, which incorporates removable jewelry on encaustic framed panels. Her work resides in the collections of The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museums , Washington, DC, as well as The Museum of Arts and Design, New York. This will also be an opportunity to view Trask’s new catalogue, Flourish: Unnatural Histories.
1:00 p.m. - Hanne Behrens - Metal Tekstilt
The artist discusses the process of weaving jewelry and her influences. Behrens work is collected by the Queen of Denmark. Her recent retrospective traveled to various museums throughout Denmark. Behrens will sign copies of her most recent catalogue Metal Tekstilt.
2:30 p.m. - Arline Fisch - Textile Techniques in Metal
Fisch will discuss her recent installation at The Racine Art Museum. Fisch founded the metals program at San Diego State University and was named a living treasure by the state of California. Her work is in museum collections worldwide. Fisch will sign copies of her latest book, Crocheted Wire Jewelry.

11:00 a.m. - Joyce Scott - Kickin’ Again - Diagonal Bead Weaving
The charismatic Joyce Scott will entertain you with stories about her beaded jewelry and sculpture. Scott was recently featured in an article in Art in America. Her work is in museums worldwide, including The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
12:30 p.m. - Dorothy Feibleman - Techniques in Soft Paste Parian - Sake Cups and Tea Bowls
Feibleman will discuss the inspirations for, and the science of, making her unique clay vessels. Feibleman’s work is held in many public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
2:00 p.m. - Sue Aygarn-Kowalski - Forged and Carved Striking Tools
Discusses her techniques of hand fabricating striking tools out of exotic woods, brass, silver, steel and delrin. Aygarn-Kowalski has been commissioned to make tools by The Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton to be presented as their luminaries awards 2009 and 2008 to Sam Maloof, Jonathan Fairbanks, Judy Kensley Mckie and Meredyth Hyatt Moses. Aygarn-Kowalski’s work is in the collection of The Museum of Arts and Design, New York.
3:30 p.m. - Yoko Miyaji-Zeltserman - Master in Woodworking and Japanese Lacquer Techniques
Yoko Miyaji-Zeltserman, a master carver and studio furniture maker, has been an artist and teacher in Japan and the United States for over twenty-five years. She will discuss her techniques and inspirations. Miyaji-Zeltserman’s pieces are finished primarily with urushi, a Japanese lacquer technique that she studied and perfected in Kyoto. The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem recently commissioned her to make a functional bench for their Japanese Gallery.
