"This piece tells the story of many walks though varied landscapes. It documents what I’ve seen and how I’ve felt on different days and at different times of year. During my travels I photograph the landscape as well as objects from nature that catch my eye. To begin this piece, I made a collage of simple, quick drawings from these landscape photographs. It was drawings provided the backdrop for the story I wished to tell.

Many of my walks begin from a small parking lot in a rural town. For many years I have admired a quaint yellow barn that stands alongside the parking lot. Recently the barn was given a fresh coat of bright red paint, the color you see on barns all over New England. The new paint has erased the gently worn and gracefully aged wood, and sadly for me, the old barn has lost its charm. My nostalgia has motivated me to memorialize the old yellow barn, but if you look closely, the newly painted red barn has also made its way into this rug and into this story."

"This piece is a collaboration between myself and my friend Marisabina Russo, talented children’s book author, illustrator, and sometimes a contributer to New Yorker Magazine.

I asked Cookie (as she is called by family and friends) if she would design a joyful piece (possibly with birds) that I could translate into an embroidery. After some discussion, she sent me a sketch and our collaboration began.
Here's a bit of our process:

Marisabina Russo: This is my second collaboration with Liz Alpert Fay. Once again, we chose a comic format for the art. When Liz suggested we use birds as our subject, I immediately thought of a picture book I wrote and illustrated several years ago called, LITTLE BIRD TAKES A BATH. We talked about the number of panels and also about doing a story without words. As I began sketching, I knew I wanted to zoom in on the action to keep the pictures clear and graphic. I settled on 12 panels and revised my original story to create a surprise encounter and new friendship near the end. When I drew the two little birds splashing joyously in a birdbath, I was reminded of the joy we are all starting to feel as we emerge from two years of isolation. The art was drawn with black ink on Arches watercolor paper and then colored with gouache paints. Having Liz translate my art into her own art using punch embroidery is a revelatory experience, at once surprising and thrilling. As fellow artists and friends, I feel like we have a lot in common with those splashing birds.

Liz Alpert Fay: As I set out to interpret Cookie’s drawing using the medium of punch needle embroidery, it was important to me to try and add something of myself to the piece, while still maintaining Cookie’s vision. With this thought in mind, I scaled the drawing up to the desired size, transferred it to the backing material, and began to choose colors. I blended many colors of threads together to create the desired effects. I also chose a variety of textures to add a bit of interest. I liked the contrast created by mixing silk threads with a high sheen, with cottons that had a more matt appearance. The joyful subject matter and use of bright cheerful colors made this piece a pleasure to work on.

As artists working in two different mediums, this project has been interesting for us both. For Marisabina, it’s been interesting to see her work translated into another medium. For me, it was once again a humbling experience to collaborate with such a talented artist and special friend."
