Statement: Herbalism
Herbs or herbal medicine with its secretive, mythical but also healing aspect is the inspiration for Nora Rochel’s work entitled “Herbalism.” She looks deeply into the subject of plants, the leitmotif of her work, fascinated by superstitions surrounding traditional folk medicine, which has roots at the very beginning of human history. Although inspired by the past, this body of work also relates to the future with use of futuristic forms cast in aluminum, reminding the viewer that undiscovered plants till exist that may hold new cures for illnesses. This work is an exploration of the world of flowers and plants, the miracle of life with its cycle of growth, bloom and decay.
Statement: Querbeet
Inspired by the wordplay of the German word querbeet, which means an unsystematic mix and match of objects as well as referencing flower beds, Nora Rochel explores the world of flowers and organic growth as visual forms that give and express in both jewellery and nature. While flowers generally are considered a bit old fashioned and sentimental, typically viewed as the embodiment of the flat and naive, Rochel is inspired by the full spectrum of their complexity and variegation. Wearing Nora Rochel‘s rings turns one’s hands into small landscapes and gardens. Many of the rings are fanciful with characteristic features of hidden details like small flowers on the inside of a larger element or the use of different metals in one piece, but often the source of inspiration is a real flower.
