Our new work features scaled models, ranging from 1/6 scale – 1/2 scale and 2 full size pieces, a desk and chair. The images started from Kathie’s drawings of vases with fanciful, abstract foliage (example left). Color, pattern, and painterly techniques are juxtaposed with hard edge craziness that complete the surface of the sculptural form. Rob’s interpretation of the drawing’s flat images are reinvented through the sculptural process of bending, carving and manipulating the wood. Aesthetics and function are intermixed during the process resulting in familiar yet unconventional furniture.
The abstract reality of the world through shape, form, and color has a long standing tradition in the history of visual art. In todays world of alternative facts and disparate opinions, we are now faced with new realities. “Rob Gartzka & Kathie Johnson, have blurred the lines between art and woodworking.Each work has been inspired by life and nature and casts off any notion that furniture must be balanced and symmetrical. As in nature,the shapes that create the form vary in weight, texture, and style. Rob Gartzka is the sculptor who breathes new life into the wood by shaping it into curvilinear forms that twist and turn, making one forget the medium is a hard, inflexible substance. Kathie Johnson paints each piece with acrylics, animating the sculptures that Gartzka has begun. The bright colors are painted on the wood in multiple layers, starting with the darkpaints and continuing on to the lighter colors in order to create additional textures in Gartzka’s carving.” Pennsylvania Art Education Association
Gartzka & Johnson’s works are a part of public and private collections worldwide. They have received numerous awards for both their individual and collaborative work, including the Governor’s Award for Art Education (Ohio), the Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships in sculpture and also in contemporary crafts.
