“My newest work is using the chatelaine as a vehicle for expressing the current state of affairs in our world. The chatelaine, which became popular in the eighteenth century, consisted of a series of chains or panels often with a hook at the top attaching to the wearer’s waist. From it would hang a variety of useful things such as keys, a watch and/or miniature implements sometimes in small boxes. My contemporary chatelaines hold essential items such as face masks, gloves and measuring tapes.”

"When thinking about this theme “Talismans”, I remembered my childhood, a time when I was weak and frequently sick, my parents gave me a talisman, and every day I would hang it around my neck like a pendant. The inspiration for this piece comes from my childhood memories and my Japanese talisman. When this pendant is worn, part of the ornament is on the heart, with the wish to protect your life. I have named this pendant, Sake-Mitama"

"Using figures or portraits of gods and saints to seek guidance and safety is common in designing and making talismans and amulets. We always say ‘God helps those who help themselves’, in the age of Covid, this seems to be more relatable than ever. The blurry human faces in my work happen to reflect the reason why we imitate the gods in the amulets: to seek help from the ones who really can help us through the tough time. We rub and kiss talismans for good luck, wealth and safety, while touching and rubbing the silver face in my work makes it shinier and clearer, just like polishing: maybe till the day it reflects as a mirror does, we will finally see who we are looking for help from: ourselves."

"When we were all asked to "shelter in place" during the Covid-19 pandemic, I searched the internet to find out how people coped in previous pandemics. I stumbled upon a jump rope rhyme related to the 1918 Spanish Flu. 'I had a little bird, its name was Enza. I opened the window, and in-flu-enza.' I decided to create a mask by combining the rhyme with the pandemic bird beak mask designed by Doctor Charles de Lorme which was black in color and also known as the plague mask. I added steampunk elements and brighter colors to match the intent of the children's playful rhyme.”

"I created this bracelet inspired by the ubiquitous spiral found in nature and in the universe, which is based on the phi ratio. Plato called this ratio the 'key to the physics of the cosmos'. Our own Milky Way is a spiral galaxy. In the center of the bracelet is a carved Moon Shell snail (with the same phi spiral) in rock crystal. On either side of the shell is fused 24K gold 'cosmic dust'. Scattered in the dust are moonstone 'planets' and 'moons', interspersed with diamond 'stars'. "

Over the years, I find certain themes reoccurring in my work, the rhythmical arrangements of several elements, repetition of similar forms or colors, the unexpected contrasts of differently textured materials…
I am endlessly fascinated with gemstones, precious or not….by the wealth of different reds found in nature, by the sea of blues: the opaqueness of lapis, the transparency and subtlety of a lightly lilac-colored sapphire. One can almost paint with these stones.
Within the self-imposed limitation of, for instance, making a gold brooch I feel I can, through my choice of colors and textures, communicate a certain mood, an attitude towards life that in turn will be, I hope , sensed by whoever is looking at the piece…like a improvisational jazz melody, like an abstract landscape…
Blanka Šperková began to experiment with wire in 1970. Inspired by traditional wire techniques used by Slovak tinkers, she has worked extensively with wire since 1975. She does not, however, use traditional tinker techniques. Rather, she has created a unique technique of finger knitting, which uses neither knitting needles nor other tools. Using a basic loop, she creates both free sculptures and jewellery.

The term mundus imaginalis was coined by the scholar Henri Corbin to be an inner yet very real world beyond time and space accessible through the imagination. Possibly similar to physicist Ervin Lazlo’s “metaverse”, a theorized inner world of parallel realities. It is also inspired by the imaginal cells in the life cycle of the butterfly which transform a caterpillar into winged magic. For better or worse, we are the imaginal cells of the Aquarian age, cocooned in our houses across the globe, gathering creative force…

Magicae Facinum (Magic Talisman) “During the research and documentation phase to create a talismanic necklace that would be protective against the coronavirus, inspiration came when I first saw an image of the immunoglobulins that are the antibodies in the blood. Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system to attack antigens, such as bacteria, viruses, and allergens. The immunoglobulin molecule seen through the microscope is already a jewel in itself by the beauty of its forms.
This necklace symbolizes the fight between health and disease, if we observ the necklace is a chain formed by coronavirus and immunoglobulins. Coronavirus: represented by stones and silver with black rhodium, this symbolizes the disease. Immunoglobulin: 8-shaped pieces in silver with green and blue coating, this symbolizes health.
In the midst of this struggle appears our talisman that comes to put all its magic in favor of health. The talisman was enshrined in a ritual, at the moment I was engraving it with my own hands, in the Latin ‘Hoc Faciet Te Fers Inmunis’ (This Necklace Will Make You Immune)”

This piece is the first to emerge from my new “Pink Grass Collection”. It is a symbol of hope and protection during these difficult times and to be worn as a reminder of the beauty of life even during times of great tension. I have carved the hawks beak out of elk tooth and the rabbit is rose gold, which is a dominant color throughout the prairie as well as the sunrise and sunset. The tiny feathers are carved from horn.

Throughout history, jewelry has been worn as protection and to heal and enhance personal power. We invited artists to create their own interpretation of a protective jewel that will guard the wearer from danger, diseases and hardship or serve as a good luck token.
